The court case of Teddy Chipere, a senior MDC official in Makoni Central district, Manicaland, who is facing charges of undermining the authority of the President, was yesterday referred to the Supreme Court after a successful application at the Mutare Magistrate's Courts.
Blessing Nyamaropa of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZHLR) successfully made an application for referral to the Supreme Court on Wednesday.
Chipere was arrested in 2010 on false charges that he addressed a rally at Shiriimwe Business Centre in Nyamaropa, Nyanga and described Robert Mugabe as a "dead man".
Chipere is among dozens of citizens who have been dragged to court for passing comments that are regarded as undermining the President's authority.
Meanwhile, Jephas Zhanje, the Buhera North Ward 31 secretary for defence and security appeared in court as a State witness in the case of Onati Ndawani, a Zanu PF activist who severely assaulted him and cut him on the chest with a spear on 11 February this year, simply because he is an MDC member.
Ndawani was arrested last month.
Zhanje sustained several injuries and was admitted at Murambinda Mission Hospital for several days. The case, whose RRB Number is 1176731was reported at Murambinda Police Station, leading to the arrest of Ndawani.
Elsewhere, in Makoni North, Assistant Inspector Razerera last week threatened MDC ward official Bernard Miloz with unspecified action if he continued participating in MDC activities.
"If you keep on doing MDC activities, you are going to die for nothing," Assistant Inspector Razerera was quoted threatening Miloz.
Bernard met the police at Tanda turn off where they were manning a roadblock on his way to attend a leadership training workshop at Mayo Primary School on 21 April this year.
